Julius Rothschild Profile Photo

Julius Rothschild passed on March 16, 2019, at 107 years of age. He was born in Mainz, Germany in 1911. He was a twin to Irma Weiler and had a younger sister, Ruth Appelbaum. In 1933, when Hitler came to power, Julius read Mein Kampf and was convinced that Hitler would carry out his malevolent threats. He therefore left Germany in 1934 and was responsible for ensuring the safety of many family members. He lived briefly in New York, then in Cleveland, Ohio, and since 1955, in Los Angeles. Shortly after immigrating to America, he married his teenage sweetheart, Hilda Gottschalk from Koblenz, Germany. They had two children, Judith Rose (1940) and Muriel Aviva (1947). Tragically, he lost Judy due to a brain tumor on December 4, 1973. He lost his beloved wife Hilda on November 10, 2002 due to a long term chronic illness. He is survived by his daughter, Muriel Waterman, her husband Jeffrey, his son-in-law Dan Bochner, his six married grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. Julius was an avid coin collector, a self-educated keen student of history and political science, a man devoted to the cause of social justice, a lifelong fan of the Cleveland Indians, a man with a zest for travel and adventure, and an individual with a passion for the stock market, even asking for stock quotes in his final days. He was a successful businessman who provided well for the family, always making sure that not only his immediate family, but also his siblings, parents, in-laws, nieces and nephews were well taken care of. He was a devoted father, a hands-on grandfather, and a loving great grandfather. He babysat, coached his grandsons’ soccer teams and taught his grandchildren about history. He had a significant impact on the development of his children and grandchildren’s character and influenced them in their career choices. He was a powerful role model who left a rich legacy as he endeavored always to perpetuate the values of Jewish identification, education, loyalty, generosity, and taking care of others.
