John Holzman was born Hans Werner Holzmann in Nuremburg, Germany. A holocaust survivor, he fled Nazi Germany with his parents and brother, Gary, in 1939, living in La Paz, Bolivia for six years. In 1946, they immigrated to the United States, where John served in the Korean War in 1952. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley and a Master’s degree in Engineering from UCLA. Settling in Los Angeles, he worked as a systems engineer for TRW from 1959 until 1987. In LA, he met and married Phyllis Silverman and settled in Rancho Palos Verdes in 1965, where they raised their two sons. After John retired, he dabbled in painting and sculpture, flew model airplanes, learned to golf, sang in the Temple Menorah choir and wrote a memoir in 2001. John and Phyllis traveled the world and spent time with their children and grandchildren. He is survived by his sons, Barry (Jennifer) and Eric (Ingrid), granddaughters, Rya and Sabina, and grandsons, Conrad and Dirk. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, October 20, 2019 at 11 AM at Hillside Memorial Park, 6001 West Centinela Ave., Los Angeles, CA 90045.
