Beloved husband of Sheila Greibach Carlyle and father of Jay Carlyle.

Jack was born in Cordova, Alaska Territory, February 23, 1933 to Helen Beatrice Carlyle and Jack Bartley Carlyle.

His father was initially a miner who was born in the Montana Territory in the early 1880s and made his way during the Yukon Gold rush to Alaska.  His father then was a snowplow railroad engineer with the Kennicott Copper Mine in Cordova until it closed in 1939. His father served for a number of Alaska Territory official jobs including in the Territorial Legislature.

Jack had rheumatic fever from 1938-1941 and was sent with his mother to California for recuperation in a warm climate and recovered and returned to Alaska Territory.

He graduated Douglas, Alaska High School in 1950 and went to San Jose City College in California in the fall.

In the spring of 1952 he graduated San Jose City College and then moved to Seattle with his mother.

He received a B.A. in Mathematics in 1954 and an M.S. in Electrical-Engineering in 1957 from the University of Washington, and an M.A. in Statistics and Ph.D. in Electrical-Engineering in 1961 from the University of California, Berkeley.

He was Assistant Professor of Electrical-Engineering at Princeton in 1961-62, then joined the UCLA Faculty in 1963 as a member of the Information-Systems Division, the predecessor of the present Computer Science Department.

Dr. Carlyle’s areas of research interest included data communication and computer methodology, discrete-state and stochastic systems, algorithms and complexity.

In 1970 he married his dear wife of 54 years, Sheila Greibach, who is a Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at UCLA. In 1975 his beloved son Jay Carlyle was born.

Jack taught for nearly 40 years as professor of Computer Science at UCLA. He retired from UCLA in 1994.

Jack was professor Emeritus of Computer Science at UCLA and passed away peacefully after a brief illness of pancreatic cancer on August 13, 2024 in Los Angeles, California at home.
