Devoted husband, father, and friend, Henry J. Wasserman, 104, passed peacefully at Our Community House of Hope in Thousand Oaks, California, on February 16, 2017.
Born on the 4th of July in 1912 in Boston, Massachusetts, Henry was the last surviving son of four boys born to late Russian immigrants, Louis Wasserman and Sarah Candler. Henry and his parents moved to Los Angeles in 1936, along with other family members.
After establishing a liquor store business with his brother, Al, Henry met his late wife, Sylvia, in Chicago while traveling by train from California to Boston while on vacation. Boarding at the home of Henry’s aunt and uncle in Chicago, Sylvia met Henry over dinner there on a Friday night. Two days later she accepted Henry’s marriage proposal in an elevator. Married six weeks later in Los Angeles, they built a life of mutual adoration that lasted 70 years.
They are survived by one daughter, Marian Polinsky, of Agoura Hills, California, numerous nieces and nephews, many extended family members, and devoted friends.
A funeral is planned for Tuesday, February 21, 2017, 1 pm, at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary, 6001 W. Centinela Avenue, Los Angeles, 90045. Those seeking to honor Henry are asked to donate to Our Community House of Hope, 805.492.6244, and website www.ourhouseofhope.org.
