Ethelda Singer ” A Grand Lady” passed away on May 18, 2016. She is survived by her sons Michael and Steven, Michael’s wife Penny, and her Grandsons Steve, Michael Charles, Richard and Kyle. Ethelda was born in New York City on September 22, 1923. She moved to Los Angeles with her family in 1933 and attended Los Angeles High School. She married Leon Singer in June of 1941, just before they both joined the war
effort. (Leon in the US Army and Ethelda as a civilian Army volunteer). After the War, Ethelda raised her family and eventually became known as an “Ultimate Volunteer”. She served as Chairman of the Docents of the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, President of the Los Angeles Library Association, Chairman of the Las Angelenas of the Los Angeles Mayor’s office, and also as a Board Member of Sister Cities International. Ethelda had a passion for the film industry and the American Film Institute. She took a special interest in the AFI International Film Society where she served on the Board of Governors. Her International travels for Sister Cities took her around the world from Russia to China , from Cuba to Morocco. She enjoyed personal meetings with world famous dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth and the Emperor of Japan. Ethelda’s message was “Peace through International understanding and people to people interaction. ” Ethelda has been honored by Mayor’s Sam Yorty, Tom Bradley and Richard Riordan for her service.Her volunteer career culminated in the Oval Office where she was honored by President Ronald Reagan for her extraordinary Service.Ethelda will be remembered by her friends and family as well as the Los Angeles community.
